What’s the Alternative?
The point of this article is not to offer a solution, but to shed light on an inaccessible practice that must change. We encourage the Microformats group to consider the problem, whether or not they accept any of the following, proposed solutions. That said, we offer these ideas as carrots to accompany our cudgel.

Originally, we considered the datetime attribute, found only on INS and DEL elements, and wished that we could use the datetime attribute instead of a title on a span, except it would be invalid code. Some have proposed using custom attribute namespaces for Microformat data, but the Microformats group is strongly opposed to this, and for a simple and valid reason. Microformats are intended to be “simple conventions for embedding semantic markup in human-readable documents.? Opening the floodgates to custom DTDs and namespaces would quickly raise the complexity level of Microformats to that of RDF, greatly reducing its adoption and therefore its relevance.

Microformate sind dafür da, um zum Beispiel Kalender und Kontaktinformationen, als Plug-In direkt auch im WordPress Blog übergeben und anzeigen zu können.

Lion’s Share of Visitors to Top 5 U.S. Web Properties – Yahoo!, Time Warner, Microsoft, Google and eBay – Come from Outside the U.S. More Than Half of Top 25 U.S. Web Properties Generate More Traffic from Outside the U.S. Than from Within. Here a News what i have read at Presseportal.de about this.

London, November 9 (ots/PRNewswire) – Lion’s Share of Visitors to Top 5 U.S. Web Properties – Yahoo!, Time Warner, Microsoft, Google and eBay – Come from Outside the U.S.

comScore Networks, a leader in measuring the digital age, today released the results of a study showing that 14 of the top 25 U.S. Web properties attract more traffic from people outside the U.S. than from within. Among them are the Top 5 Web properties in the U.S.

Yahoo! Sites, Time Warner Network, Microsoft Sites, Google Sites and eBay.

„As Internet usage outside the U.S. has grown rapidly from a small base, the U.S. share of the world’s online population has fallen from 65 percent to less than 25 percent in the last 10 years,“ said Bob Ivins, managing director of comScore Europe. „The fact that more than three-quarters of the traffic to Google, Yahoo!, and Microsoft is now coming from outside of the U.S. is indicative of what a truly global medium the Internet has become.“

Page Views and Engagement of Non-U.S. Users

Although international users represent a larger proportion of the overall traffic to many of the top-ranked U.S. sites, comScore data show that U.S. users are more engaged with many of these properties, as indicated by the slightly higher proportion of pages viewed by U.S. users. Two notable exceptions are (1) Google, whose non-U.S. users represent 79.8 percent of total traffic to the site but account for a higher share of page views (89.1 percent), reflecting the higher number of searches conducted per searcher in International
markets; and (2) Lycos, which has non-U.S. users representing 39.4 percent of its visitors while drawing a disproportionately higher share of pages from outside the U.S. (73.3 percent).

„The high proportion of visitors and page views from outside the U.S. represents a solid growth opportunity for U.S.-based ad-supported properties, which currently derive most of their revenues from domestic online advertising,“ Ivins added.

Sites with Audiences Concentrated in the U.S.

Some sites do not attract a substantial percentage of international visitors. Examples include U.S.-based, telecommunications/ cable companies such as Verizon and AT&T, media entities including Fox (owners of MySpace), New York Times Digital, and CBS, and major U.S. retailers, banks and airlines such as Target, Wal-Mart, Bank of America and United.

Google will start an online payment system this month that will challenge eBay’s PayPal and let Google offer more targeted ads, an analyst wrote.GBuy, which will begin on June 28, will handle purchases between shoppers and merchants, RBC Capital Markets analyst Jordan Rohan wrote in a note to investors.

Participating sellers will be listed as „trusted GBuy merchant“ in Google search results, he said.

The product will generate transaction fees for Google and purchase data may help the company identify which search keywords are most likely to generate sales and increase the cost of those ads, Rohan said.

Google spokeswoman Sonya Boralv didn’t return a call seeking comment.
